Welcome to a New Academic Year at UMKC!

By Dr. Susan Wilson, Vice Chancellor, Division of Diversity and Inclusion

Welcome Back!

This time of year is exciting and filled with energy! New students are entering UMKC and other students are returning. We have new faculty who are joining us too. This is the season to make and renew connections and to celebrate our uniqueness as we embrace a new academic year.

We are proud of the many new Inclusive Excellence initiatives that were funding by the UM System to advance diversity all across campus.  In fact, UMKC was approved for all but three of our funding requests. Having diversity programming spread all across campus is important, because advancing diversity and inclusion is not just the job of the UMKC D & I Division. Making progress in key areas that impact equity –retention, faculty composition, a welcoming climate—is everyone’s job.

Some highlights of the many funded projects include an expanded financial literacy program, a diversity dialogue, and skills program for nursing students and retention programs for African American and Latino students.  To attract and retain underrepresented students in the health sciences, $80,000 was awarded to the Health Science campus. In addition, signature programs for the Division of Diversity and Inclusion received continued funding: Faculty Diversity Dialogues Program, Student Diversity Ambassadors, and Affinity group programs.

We have a lot of work ahead of us and that will tailor the work of diversity and inclusion to the needs of academic and administrative units.  We wish you well in this new phase of our journey!
