Student Affairs Welcomes New Team Members!

By: Keichanda Dees-Burnett, Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs

Israel “Ivan” Ramirez joined the UMKC Multicultural Student Affairs Team on September 24, 2018 as the Senior Coordinator for the Avanzando Mentoring Program for Latinx students. Ivan comes to us from Johnson County Community College (JCCC) where he served as a Diversity Recruiter. In that role, he worked with students on the process of applying to college, financing college and helping First Generation College students navigate the Higher Education experience.

In his new role, Ivan will use that experience to serve Avanzando Scholars and greater student population by creating innovative programming to increase engagement for our Latinx students. He also hopes to contribute to strengthening our existing initiatives around the retention of men of color at UMKC. Ivan moved to the United States from Mexico when he was 15. He enjoys meeting people and experiencing new cultures through conversations. He considers himself a sports fanatic, but only every four years when the World Cup is in session!

Ivan will be located in the Student Union, Room 320C and can be reached at 235-6706 or

Kari Jo Freudigmann joined the Office of Student Involvement as the Assistant Director for LGBTQIA Programs and Services. She comes to us most recently from Penn State where she served as their Programming Coordinator in the LGBTQA Student Resource Center.  Prior to that, she earned her Master’s at Missouri State University and a Bachelor’s at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.  Her career aspiration is to be a Director of an LGBTQ+ center in the future.

As a Wisconsin native, I am a huge fan of the Milwaukee Brewers! (Sorry Royals fans).  In my free time, I like to play all kinds of games (board, tabletop, card, and video).  Additionally, I enjoy spending time with my partner, Maryann, and our adorable kitty, Kiki.

Kari Jo will be located in Student Union, Room 320 and can be reached at or 816-235-1639.
