There are a few things you should know about supporting a student with a disability in your course.

Classroom with emtpy desksStudents with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations under state and federal law. These accommodations ensure equal access to the learning environment at UMKC and should not fundamentally alter an essential aspect of a course or program.

Please consider adding this statement to your syllabi: “If you need accommodations for a disability, please contact Student Disability Services at (816) 235-5696 or disability@umkc.edu. You should contact them as soon as possible to establish an Accommodation Plan. For more information visit www.umkc.edu/disability.”

Please treat student’s disability information confidentially. People with disabilities are often subject to discrimination, stigma and misunderstanding. Please remember that information about the student’s disability and the accommodations provided are personal and confidential in nature and should be handled in the same way you would want your personal information handled.

Letters of accommodation will be provided students detailing the required accommodations. We do everything to insure that the student has a qualifying disability and that the accommodations are appropriate.

If you have concerns with any accommodation recommendation contact us directly. We will be happy to discuss your concerns and address any issues.
