ESL Only

This is for students that plan to only study English at UMKC. This application is open to US residents, dual citizens, F-1 visa holders, F-2 visa holders, and students with other types of visas as well.

Students who want to study ESL Only can choose to study in-person in Kansas City, or online if they are not in the United States.

1+1 Partner Exchange Program

Are you a student at a Partner University who is interested in our 1+1 Program? This exchange program is for students attending one of our international Partner Universities.

Conditional Admission

Are you planning to study an academic area after the English program? Depending on the academic program you are interested in, it may be possible to apply for the Intensive English Program as well as another department at UMKC without submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score. This is called Conditional Admission.

For a list of UMKC programs that offer Conditional Admission, click here. Students who apply for Conditional Admission must apply for admission to the ALI and their chosen academic department at the same time. For more information on different departments at UMKC and their requirements, please explore here.

Per US government regulations, US universities cannot issue academic I-20s to students who have not proven that they meet all standards of admission, including proof of English proficiency. This means that when you apply for Conditional Admission, you will receive an I-20 that lists ESL as your program of study. Once you have completed your ESL classes, our International Student Affairs Office (ISAO) will help you transition to an I-20 that lists your degree program. When you are Conditionally Admitted, you will receive an admission letter that states your academic program and ESL. You can use this admission letter at your visa appointment to prove Conditional Admission.

Online Pathway Program

Are you interested in taking ESL classes and starting your academic program online? The ALI offers Online Pathway Programs to UMKC’s School of Computing and Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences. Students can complete their ESL coursework and take academic classes online.
