The University of Missouri-Kansas City received high rankings in the annual RecylceMania competition, a friendly recycling competition among nearly 190 participating universities in the nation. This year, UMKC received a number three ranking, 82.144 percent recycling rate, in the Diversion category.
Each year, UMKC participates in RecycleMania in efforts to reduce waste and educate the campus community on recycling best practices. Individual event success rates are as follows:
- Clean your files, books and more – 32 departments on the Volker and Health Sciences campuses participated in Clean your Files, Books and More
- E-Recycling – Volunteers collected a total of five tons, 10,000 pounds, of electronics during this year’s e-recycling event.
- Peer-to-peer outreach and social media efforts reached a total of 5,000 students
RecycleMania is coordinated by the UMKC Sustainability Office, Campus Facilities Management, Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dining Services, Procurement Services, student interns and work studies. With the participation and support of the campus, and Kansas City, community, UMKC recycled a total of 156,367 pounds.
