Yesterday, faculty and staff at UMKC Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing and Medicine held meetings and began organizing in response to the major storms that swept through Joplin and southern Missouri over the weekend. The Schools are closely monitoring the situation and are reaching out to our students and alumni in the storm area. Along with other local health care and emergency management organizations, our professional schools are also coordinating potential combined requests from the Red Cross, regarding a call for medical professionals and other aid. [The Red Cross has offered a special website where medical professionals can go to register and indicate their willingness to volunteer.]
The area hit by the tornadoes, which have so far killed more than 100 people, has been declared a disaster area by President Obama and Missouri Gov. Nixon.
