How has college inspired you?
College has inspired me to take on leadership roles and pursue my dream of becoming a dentist. My parents did not attend college, so I feel fortunate to have attended a prestigious university and graduate school.
Why did you choose UMKC?
Because I wanted to come back to Kansas City. I am very close to my family and I wanted to be nearer to them. Also, UMKC has an excellent dental school.
Where is UMKC taking you?
To get my degree in dentistry. Afterwards, I would like to stay here in Kansas City and have my own practice.
Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?
I have become more confident, more responsible and closer to God. I have learned to manage my time wisely and to continue to give back to the community.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received from a professor?
Don’t stress the small things. Enjoy your time, learn and feel fortunate that you are given this opportunity. Many people would love to be where you are today.
What do you admire most at UMKC?
I admire the education at UMKC. I came to the dental school with zero knowledge about dentistry, and I have learned an immense amount about oral health. The curriculum is rigorous, but my classmates are like family. We help each other out during our ups and downs.
What does being the first person in your family to attend college mean to you?
My grandparents grew up in poverty and did not attend high school. My parents graduated from high school but they did not attend college due to finances. My parents have always strived to provide the best education for my sister and me. I have attended private schools all my life, and I am fortunate and blessed because of the sacrifices my parents made in order for me to attend the best schools. I will continue to stress the importance of education to my children and others.
What’s your greatest fear?
Failure. I passed National Boards Part 1, but I will be taking Part 2 next year.
How did you choose dentistry?
I wanted to help others but couldn’t see myself in a hospital setting. I did some shadowing and settled on dentistry.

What is your favorite dental tool?
The hand piece (drill) because I take out decay and make the patient feel better.
Do patients generally take good care of their teeth?
Patients I see do not take good care of their teeth. They have no insurance and that’s a problem. After I see them, they try to take better care of them.
How do you de-stress?
The gym is my stress reliever. I also like to run and spend time with family and friends.
What excites you?
Helping others and the community, especially when patients call me with pain or toothaches and I am able to help them. Last spring I volunteered at Team Smile at Kauffman Stadium. I helped children at “Give Kids a Smile” at the School of Dentistry.
What is one word that best describes you?
Determined. I have never given up my dream of becoming a dentist. There have been many obstacles along the way, but I persevered and stayed focused.
