UMKC School of Pharmacy professor receives 2011 CPNP Saklad Award

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Pharmacy is pleased to announce that Roger W. Sommi, PharmD, Professor of Pharmacy and Psychiatry, has been awarded the 2011 Judith J. Saklad Award from the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP).

This award is presented annually to a senior psychiatric pharmacy practitioner who has achieved a level of professional distinction, represents the qualities and ideals of professional enthusiasm, displays a passion for optimizing patient care, and demonstrates continuing dedication to the practice of psychiatric pharmacy. The Saklad Award was presented to Dr. Sommi on May 2 during the 2011 CPNP Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz.

Dr. Sommi teaches and practices as part of the Psychopharmacy Research and Education Program at the Center for Behavioral Medicine, one of UMKC’s affiliated health institutions. His area of research interest is primarily in outcomes associated with drug treatment of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. He is a consultant with several community mental health centers and is involved with the local Kansas City chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness as an instructor in the Crisis Intervention Team training program for local law enforcement agencies.

The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists was founded in 1998 when a network of pharmacists created the professional society. The mission of CPNP is to promote excellence in pharmacy practice, education and research to optimize treatment outcomes of individuals affected by psychiatric and neurologic disorders.
