Ninety –Eight A&S graduating seniors were awarded Latin Honors at Commencement on May 6, 2011. Forty were summa cum laude; 58 were magna cum laude.
While total applications to A&S degree programs for FS 2011 are almost the same as they were for FS 2010 at the February 28 reporting date (2,023 to 2,025), they are differently distributed. They are up among those who would be first-time college students and down among those who would be graduate or transfer students.
In SP2011, there are 2,975 undergraduate majors enrolled in A&S; in SP 2010 the number was 2,801. In SP 2011, there are 672 graduate students in A&S degree programs; in SP 2010, there were 692. The number of all students enrolled in A&S courses in SP 2011 was 4,433; in SP 2010 it was 4,265.
In AY 2007-2008 the A&S Scholarship office was able to make awards totaling $119,000. For AY 2010-2011, the awards total already exceeds $369,000.
Five Departments and the BLA Program each had more than 200 majors of record for Fall 2010. The five departments were: Chemistry, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice and Criminology, English, and Psychology.
There were 3,969 undergraduate degree-seeking majors in the A&S College in Fall Semester, 2010. The number of graduate degree seeking students was 690. For Fall 2009, those numbers were 3,762 and 676.
A&S Faculty were awarded $6,517,827 in grants and contracts from extra-mural sources in calendar year 2010. For calendar year 2009, the amount was $3,404,389.
In Fall 2010, A&S students came from 40 of the 50 states. The top six states in order of ‘contribution’ to the total are Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Illinois, Nebraska and California.
In AY 2010, the A&S awarded 914 BA degrees, 173 MA degrees and 4 Ph.D. degrees (Psychology). In AY 2009, those numbers were: 829, 187 and 4. In AY 2008, they were: 713,198 and 2. That is an increase of 28. 2 % in awarded BA degrees between 2008 and 2010 and a decrease of 12.2 % in awarded MA degrees over the same period.
Typically, each MSW student must complete 1,040 hours of supervised field work as part of the MSW degree program over a two-year period. The UMKC MSW fieldwork interns and their supervising instructors provide in-kind service valued at almost $1,000,000 to the community.
The A&S School of Social Work placed 143 MSW graduate students into 92 different agencies in the metro area in Fall Semester, 2010. They are being supervised by 86 on-site field instructors who are guided by 15 members of the Social Work faculty.
In FY 2009, ORS records show that there were 49 external grants or contracts awarded to 28 faculty in the College with an average value of $129,755. For FY 2010, those same records show 43 external grants or contracts awarded to 26 faculty in A&S with an average value of $ 141,441.
A&S had an enrollment head count of 4,386 one week before the start of classes in Fall, 2010. In Fall 2009, that number was 4,090. Those enrollments led to 63,314 SCH in Fall 2010 and 59,524 in Fall 2009. The average SCH load for Fall 2010 is 14.66; for Fall 2009 it was 14.56.
Fall 2010 Campus headcount (as of one week before classes) was up 5.9% while the College was up 7.2%. Fall 2010 Campus SCH is up 5.9% while the College SCH is up 8%.
As of one week before classes, there were 2,665 continuing students and 1,721 new students in the College in Fall 2010. In 2009, those numbers were 2,503 and 1,587.
At the start of the 2009-2010 academic year, there were 178 regular A&S faculty; 98 percent have the terminal degree in their field of expertise.
In 2009, A&S faculty obtained over $3,400,000 in external grants. There were 50 grants awarded to 31 individuals in 13 academic departments, the Dean’s Office and New Letters.
Enrollment in the College was 3,216 in Spring 2009 and 3,680 in Fall 2009.
In Fall of 2009, there were 2,908 students with declared majors in A&S.
From their FY 2009 grant efforts, 13 departments in the College will be getting a total of $217,822 dollars in Research Incentive Funds (RIF) that came to UMKC as F&A (overhead recovered from the granting agency) from the grants and contracts obtained by their faculty. Three of seven Humanities Departments, all four Natural Science Departments, and six of the seven Social Science Departments will get their shares which can then be used to support other research-related activities of those departments.
