UMKC honored for sustainability and green cleaning initiatives
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has been recognized by American School & University Magazine (ASUM) for its “green cleaning” approach to campus maintenance and housekeeping procedures. UMKC is one of only 10 educational institutions in the country to be honored in ASUM’s 2011 Green Cleaning Awards.
In 2007, UMKC Campus Facilities Building Services unit made the commitment to participate in green cleaning strategies. From the custodian on the floor to students, faculty and staff in the buildings, green cleaning has been embraced as the gold standard at UMKC.
There are currently more than 40 campus buildings being cleaned as a part of the campus green cleaning program. The focus of the program is to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals with safer, eco-friendly cleaning products, improve indoor air quality, reduce the risk of employee contamination and implement a set standard for best practices in the workplace through interactive education of all employees. To date, nearly 275 UMKC employees have completed the Green Housekeeping Program Certification training.
