UMKC’s weekly arts, sports and culture roundup

Every week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

Featured event: Hear UMKC Communications Studies students’ prize winning programs

Turn your radio on! K-Roo.org has the latest in sports, movie reviews and good music.

At least at UMKC, radio still rules. In an annual competition sponsored by the Missouri Broadcast Educators Association, five UMKC Communications Studies students brought home top honors in 2014 College Media Awards.

Short segments from all of the award-winning pieces will be played at the Communication Studies Student Showcase on Wednesday, May 14th, 6:30 p.m. at the Tivoli Theater in Westport, 4050 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, Mo. This event is free and open to the public.

Ross Stinemetz (Dramatic), Cody Tapp and Ryan Witkowski (Play-by-Play), and Zach Hinton (Station Promotion) received First Place awards. Honorable Mention went to Will Trumper (Dramatic).

Angela Elam, their radio production class instructor, was happy for her students’ continued recognition.

“This is the fourth year in a row that a UMKC student took first place in Radio Drama, and this year we picked up second place, too. People are starting to take notice.”

At this year’s MBEA competition, Stinemetz won for his drama, Gamblin’ Man, a continuation of the Sundown Sector series that brought him and Tapp first place in 2013. Stinemetz also gained a first place in the Documentary/ Public Affairs category with his radio series on writers for Number One magazine. Both aired in the spring of 2013 on K-ROO.org, UMKC’s student Internet radio station.

Second honors went to Trumper, current program director of K-ROO, for his radio drama, “White Noise.” Trumper describes the parody as “top 40 meets The Twilight Zone.” It’s a narrative in between radio waves about a soul doomed to the torment of a top 40 pop music purgatory.

Tapp and Witkowski–who served respectively as K-ROO’s first sports director and station manager when it began in late 2012–earned their second MBEA first-place award for Play-by-Play, for their coverage of the winter 2013 UMKC vs. Iowa State basketball game.

Hinton won first place for the audio promotion of “The Ace Klub,” his music show airing Monday afternoons on K-ROO.org from 2 to 3 p.m.

Trumper can be heard weekly from 9 to 10 p.m. on “The Film Show” with Ted Miller. Guests are welcome to engage in heated debate and cinema sparring.
