UMKC Women’s Council hosts reception for “ArtWork by Nicole Emanuel”

Graduate Assistance Fund recipient’s work debuts Sept. 14 at Miller Nichols Library

Kansas City, Mo. – The University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) Women’s Council will host a reception to kick off “ArtWork by Nicole Emanuel”. The reception will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Miller Nichols Library second-floor Dean’s Gallery, 800 East 51st St., Kansas City, Mo., and the exhibit will run through December. A 2009 Women’s Council Graduate Assistance Fund (GAF) recipient, Emanuel is working toward a Liberal Studies master’s degree in writing and painting in the UMKC School of Graduate Studies. Almost 1,500 women graduate students at UMKC have received GAF fellowships or immediate aid awards. Established in 1971, the GAF provides financial support to women enrolled in graduate programs and the Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine and Pharmacy.

Emanuel also is founder and artistic developer at InterUrban Arthouse, the 2011 ArtsKC Awards Featured Artist, Artsmart and Cultural Arts Committee Chair at Briarwood Elementary in Prairie Village, Kan. and owner and operator of Nicole Emanuel Studios. Emanuel earned a bachelor’s degree in Design and Industry from San Francisco State University and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute.

Founded in 1967, UMKC Women’s Council‘s mission is to inform women about UMKC’s resources, educate and provide financial assistance and expanded opportunities to women graduate and professional students. In pursuit of its goals, the Women’s Council sponsors a number of annual and ongoing events and programs. A hallmark of Women’s Council programs, the Graduate Assistance Fund has sponsored fellowships and short-term assistance for nearly 1,500 exceptional women graduate students at UMKC. Members and friends contribute annually to the GAF endowment or establish lasting gifts through named awards.

High among the educational offerings of the Women’s Council shines the annual Starr Symposium, co-organized by the Women’s Center. The Starr Symposium examines the progress and needs of women locally, nationally and globally. The Women’s Council also works through the Women’s Collaborative to achieve its educational objectives.
