Washington trip will also include visits with members of Congress
Max Skidmore, a Curators’ Professor of Political Science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, has been chosen to attend the White House Senior Community Leaders Summit in Washington, DC on June 26.
The summit, sponsored by the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, provides senior community leaders from throughout the nation the opportunity to share with White House staff their personal experiences and views of the Affordable Care Act, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The summit will include a policy briefing and panel discussions on these vital federal programs which touch the lives of virtually every American family.
“My commitment to Social Security and Medicare reflects less direct personal benefit to me than concern for their benefits to the community as a whole; that is, to the American people,” Skidmore said. “Social Security is an enormous asset to the working population, both during working years and in retirement, while Medicare assists greatly those who are 65 or older.”
Skidmore will be one of about 100 community activists who will attend the White House summit and participate in three days of engagement and education activities. In addition to the summit, his trip to Washington will also include a White House tour, policy briefings and a trip to Capitol Hill to lobby Members of Congress on the importance of strengthening, not cutting, programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
