Renowned leadership expert brings boot camp to campus and community

Professor Gallos will give keynote on leadership, followed by sessions for honing leadership skills

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City Starr Symposium and the Henry W. Bloch School of Management Executive MBA will sponsor a skills-building series of boot-camp workshops for leaders entitled “Leadership Becomes Us” The Art of Contemporary Leadership – Vision, Passion, Purpose and Joy.” The six workshops will follow a keynote lecture by Joan Gallos, Ph.D., professor of leadership and University of Missouri Curators’ distinguished teacher professor and director, Bloch Executive MBA program.

The workshops will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 in Royall Hall, 800 E. 52nd St., Room 111, Kansas City, Mo. The cost of the event is $10. It is free to UMKC students and open to the public. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 816-235-6222. The boot-camp sessions will be led by members of UMKC faculty and staff and have been designed to produce concrete results for the participants. Topics of sessions include “The Real Power of ‘You'” and “Building Social Capital.”

“The 2011 Starr Symposium, ‘Age Becomes Us: Leading, Empowering and Building Capacity Across the Generations,’ inspired people to consider new ways of envisioning our place in the world – despite old, ineffective stereotypes that can be dividing lines,” said Kelli Wright, 2011 Starr Symposium chair and research associate, UMKC Institute for Human Development.

“Now that we know there is little to divide us, we can begin practicing together the skills we’ll need to promote growth and positive change in ourselves and our communities. ‘Leadership Becomes Us: The Art of Contemporary Leadership – Vision, Purpose, Passion and Joy’ will provide a solid beginning for our journeys.”

The symposium is sponsored by the UMKC Women’s Council and Women’s Center. For additional information, visit the Symposium’s schedule of events.
