Erilyn Wiltshire-Beer Dances To The Max

At UMKC, the students are our story. Look, listen and learn about us through interviews, photographs and videos of our students. Read the rest of the student stories and go to our tumblr site and follow.

NEW! We’ve started the next chapter of our student storytelling series, Dynamic Duos, about faculty and staff mentorship.

We’d love to hear from you at mcom@umkc.edu about students, faculty and staff who have great stories to share.

ERILYN WILTSHIRE-BEER

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance | Conservatory of Music and Dance | May 2016

Where is UMKC taking you?

Into the real world.

Why did you choose UMKC?

It has one of the top conservatories for dance in the country. I heard about UMKC because my mom is a dance professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The Conservatory at UMKC has offered a lot of performance opportunities and traveling, including France. The experiences make UMKC stand apart.

How has your college program inspired you?

It has opened my eyes to all future opportunities. Dance is everywhere.

Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?

That patience and consistency is difficult for me and something I must always work on.

Why did you choose dance? I was a gymnast first. With dance, I liked the idea of expression rather than steps and instead of a routine.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received from a professor?

“More effort.” – DeeAnna Hiett.

What motto do you live by?

“Good, better, best. Never let it rest until your good is better than your best.”

What do you admire most at UMKC?

UMKC gives you so many outlets for involvement, in every area possible.

What are your lifelong goals?

To save a life, to have a family and to be a professional in dance.

What is one word that best describes you?

Extreme. I try to do everything to the best of my ability with the most passion possible. Maximum is better.
