There’s a new parking option on the Volker Campus, and that’s reason to celebrate. Join the University of Missouri-Kansas City community for the grand opening of UMKC’s new six-level Cherry Street Parking Structure.

The grand opening will take place Monday, Sept. 10, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., on the first level of the new parking structure. Join us for free live music, free snow cones, and a raffle. A brief speaking program will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Complimentary event parking will be offered on the third, fourth, and fifth levels of the parking structure. The Cherry Street Parking Structure is located on 5000 Cherry Street. As a result of the grand opening, the first level of the structure, along with the Oak Street entrance, will be closed Sept. 10.

The structure serves faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Metered visitor parking is available on the fifth level, near the structure’s two walkways. One walkway provides access to the Student Union, the other to the Performing Arts area.

The parking structure has three entrances/exits: On Oak Street, 50th Street and Cherry Street.

Cyclists and commuters may also make use of the structure. The space houses secure bicycle storage, and two public showers that may be used by bicyclists.

Although the structure provides room for approximately 1,500 vehicles, it serves as more than just a parking garage. The University Police and mailroom occupy space in the ground floor of the garage.

The new Cherry Street Parking Structure replaces the 709-vehicle Oak Street Parking Structure. The Oak Street Parking Structure was constructed in the 1970s. A Parking Study conducted in 2008 evaluated current and projected parking demand on the Volker campus. It recommended the campus replace the Oak Street Parking Structure with a new, 1,430-space structure.
