Each week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

What: Spring Dance Concert
The Spring Dance Concert for the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance.
Where: White Recital Hall, James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.
When: 7:30 p.m. April 16-18, and at 2:30 p.m. on April 18
Tickets are $8 and $6 for senior citizens. UMKC faculty, staff and students are free with UMKC or student ID. The April 18 performance at 2:30 p.m. is free and informal. For tickets, call 816-235-6222.

What: Education is not a crime (Film)
Education is not a crime in the United States. But education is a crime in Iran. To help change that through awareness, various UMKC departments are showing a film by Maziar Bahari, “To Light a Candle.” A question and answer session will follow featuring Dr. Sabet, an Iranian imprisoned for serving in Baha’i institutions; Dr. Rabbani, KU Peace & Conflict Studies; Dr. Nash, UMKC School of Education; Dr. Susan Wilson, Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion; and Payam Ansari, a UMKC Graduate Student. Light refreshments will be served.

What: Before and After
This lecture centers around Esther Honig’s project, “Before & After,” a digital experiment created by sending a portrait of herself to Photoshop freelancers around the world and asking that they “make her beautiful.” Esther will share how the project was conceived and eventually went viral, receiving more than 2.5 million views and appearing in more than 30 countries and major media sources such as TIME, The Atlantic, Vice Magazine and The Chicago Tribune. She will review a selected number of images from the collection, evaluating the social and cultural implications of each. Honig has appeared on CNN International, Al Jazerra, Good Morning America and The Today Show.

Miller Nichols Library is organizing the first International Students Day. This event celebrates the diversity of UMKC students through the promotion and the participation in diverse cultural and entertainment activities one country at a time.

This choral conducting master class/workshop will be on Brahms’s “Liebeslieder Walzer, Op. 52,” with Robert Bode and Eph Ehly. It will feature the Conservatory Singers with a lecture at 1 p.m. by musicology professor William Everett.

What: Design Speaks: Angie Diederich
Shortly after graduating from UMKC in 2008 with a degree in Studio Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design, and after a short stint with the Federal Reserve Bank as a graphic designer, Angie Diederich moved to Chicago to further her career. She first worked with G2 Promotional Marketing as an art director, later moving to Queue Marketing Communications as a senior art director. After Queue merged with Ryan Partnership, Diederich advanced to the position of associate creative director. Her work at these three major agencies involved creating TV, radio, social, digital, promotional and shopper marketing campaigns for countless global brands including Kraft Foods, Beam Global, Heineken, Frontier Cable and Chaco Shoes.

What: EXHIBITION: Ryan Schick MA Thesis Exhibition
The UMKC Gallery of Art presents current master of art student Ryan Schick’s thesis show. Inspired by the universe’s process of entropy, Schick’s art mirrors this theoretical approach. Rather than imposing a subject into his paintings, his methods involve breaking down abstract shapes, lines, and colors in a layering process that opens up a relationship between him and the materials.

What: The New Theatre Restaurant presents, “Forever Plaid”
This internationally acclaimed musical revue tells the story of four young, eager, male singers who in 1950 meet their demise in a bus crash on the way to their first big concert. Every evening they return from Heaven to posthumously fulfill their dreams, to perform the concert that never was.

UMKC Connection: Co-owners Dennis Hennessy and Richard Carrothers are both UMKC graduates and both were presented with honorary doctorates by the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences in 2012.

What: Dr. Seuss’ The Cat In The Hat
“It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how!” says the Cat in the tall red and white hat. This production features Sally and her brother, their pet Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and all of the favorite moments from the classic Dr. Seuss tale. Zany fun and adventures abound! With the trickiest of tricks and craziest of ideas, the Cat is certainly fun to play with. And he turns a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure. But what will mom find when she gets home? The approximate running time is 50 minutes. Each performance is interactive! Built into each show is a pre-show experience that will explore Dr. Seuss’ world and engage kids physically and cognitively.
