Chancellor’s Statement on Orlando Tragedy

‘Reach out to each other in support and solidarity’

Today we are united in our grief over yesterday’s tragedy in Orlando, where members of the LGBTQIA community were targeted.

UMKC stands as one with the people of Orlando, with the global LGBTQIA community, and with all those who reject hatred and violence.

I encourage all of us to reach out to each other in support and solidarity. I also encourage anyone who desires additional support to take advantage of our campus resources. Students, faculty and staff can contact the UMKC Counseling Services office at 816-235-1635. The Mind-Body Connection, a collaboration of the UMKC Counseling Center and Student Health and Wellness, is open today and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 112 of the Atterbury Student Success Center. Community-based support is also available through the Kansas City Anti-Violence Project hotline (816-561-0550) and the Trevor Project (1-866-488-7386).

Our trained professionals are ready to help, just as our entire community is committed to support each other and all those who are suffering at this difficult time.
