Health Sciences Intern Joins Women’s Center Staff

By Kiana Mullins

Hello, my name is Kiana Mullins and I am in my final semester here at UMKC. I am part of the Bachelor of Health Sciences program with a minor in Public Health. One of the reasons I chose UMKC was because of its diversity. When I stepped foot on campus I was introduced to different people and I got familiar with other cultures than my own. I enjoy learning from different cultures because it allows me to see a different point a view.

Right now, I am doing my internship at the UMKC Women’s Center. I have chosen to do my internship here because it benefits me and the women here on campus. As their mission statement states, “we advocate, educate, and provide support services for the advancement of women’s equity on campus and within the community at large.” What stands out to me the most is that the Women’s Center has access to resources for women in need. They organize events and programs that promote equity and inclusion. With my Health Sciences degree, I can see what health disparities can align with women’s health. The Women’s Center promotes a safe and healthy environment for women on campus and this is something that I am passionate about when it comes to keeping the community healthy. I do believe that this was one of my best choices I have made to help get me involved on campus and advance my knowledge of women’s health.

My plans after graduation are to pursue a dual master’s degree in Business Administration and Health Administration at Saint Louis University. I also will be working at SSM Health DePaul Hospital in Saint Louis. My goals this semester are to network, start perfecting my resume, and to start working on the requirements for graduate school.
