SIGNS & SYMBOLS – African Images in African American Quilts

In conjunction with the exhibition Bold Expressions,  Dr. Maude Southwell Wahlman, the Dorothy and Dale Thompson Endowed Chair of Global Arts and a leading authority on African American quilts, presented a lecture on October 9 where she discussed how the knowledge of technical skills, secret African signs and protective charms were remembered and encoded in African American textiles.  Dr. Wahlman also signed copies of her book Signs and Symbols – African Images in African American Quilts.
