UMKC RecycleMania!

By , February 8, 2013 3:06 pm

UMKC returns to the nationwide competition Spring 2013 RecycleMania!  This is a great opportunity to show UMKC cares about of our planet and continues to promote healthy lifestyles.

This will be the 5th year of competition and our campus has placed consistently higher amongst other schools since 2008.  Last spring UMKC ranked 13th out of 242 campuses and our goal in 2013 is to rank in the top 10!  Missouri Governor Jay Nixon recently recognized UMKC for our outstanding participation.  This year, we ask you to come and join in on the fun and help our campus community be recognized for its eco-friendly and sustainable practices.

The competition runs through the end of March 2013.  Please plan to participate in the competition by recycling all your paper, cardboard, Plastics 1-7 and food organics for composting.

If there are any questions about recycling or the upcoming competition you can contact the Sustainability Office student work-study Brian K. Floyd at bkftg6@umkc.edu

Go Green With Bike Rentals From Swinney!

By , April 10, 2012 10:15 am

Now that spring weather is here to stay, it’s time to think about ways to avoid driving around campus and around the area. Swinney Recreation Center has both daily and semester-long bike rentals available, free to all UMKC students! Be sure to check out the webpage for more information.

Using Clean Commute and The Hub

By , April 12, 2011 8:12 am

UMKC’s Pilot Program “Clean Commute” is now in its second year of existence. The goal of this program is to increase sustainability around campus by providing an alternate form of transportation around and near campus.

Through Clean Commute, all UMKC faculty, staff, and students can check out a free bike for the semester, or for the day! New Fuji, Jamis & Redline hybrid-style bikes complete with combination lock, helmet, and front and rear lights are available for loan. This includes the bike, lock, helmet, and lights. You can take your bike anywhere on or off campus for as long as you have the bike in your possession. Semester rentals are available at the Hub, and daily rentals are available through Swinney Rec Center.

The Hub is also useful if you have your own bike. As a way to help cyclists stay on the road and to encourage more people to pedal instead of drive, UMKC established The Hub, an on-campus bike station. The Hub provides repair and maintenance for UMKC Clean Commute loaner bikes at no cost. UMKC students, staff and faculty may also visit The Hub to get a non-loner bike repaired, volunteer, or learn more about alternative transportation options around Kansas City.

For more information, visit the Swinney Recreation website or call 816-235-2715. Or check out the Hub on UMKC’s Sustainability Website. They can also be reached by phone at 816-235-2715.

Sustainability Series- Sustainability Team

By , March 22, 2011 8:13 am

Check out the sustainability efforts being made by UMKC. This blog series will highlight what’s happening on and around campus, student organizations putting in effort, and even competitions to help make blue and gold go green!

UMKC’s commitment to sustainability is visible across the entire campus. The new Student Union and the Herman and Dorothy Johnson Residence Hall are state-of-the-art green buildings. Sustainable gardening is at a student-led community garden, and the Student Union and Miller Nichols Library (MNL) have rooftop gardens. The Hub bicycle repair center helps keep students mobile and carbon footprint-free. Students and the community can stay informed through the Recycling-on-the-Go educational kiosk, and can use the solar recycling center east of the MNL.

Check out the Sustainability website to see all the great things going on on-campus! You can also check out their facebook page, or contact Kaye Johnson, the sustainability coordinator at (816) 235- 6402 or by e-mail at johnstonrk@umkc.edu.
