Important Registration (and refund) Deadlines

By , August 23, 2011 8:25 am

Welcome to the first week of classes!  This week can be hectic as well as exciting–and even more hectic if you decide you want to change your class schedule.  This is perfectly normal–but here are a few things to keep in mind while you decide.

  Financial Aid.  Your Financial Aid is awarded based on the number of credit hours in which you are enrolled.  If you drop below the required number of hours, including if you completely withdraw from the University, your aid may be adjusted and you may owe the difference back to UMKC.  This federal regulation is called Return to Title IV; click here for more information

  Refund Schedule.  If you decide to withdraw from a class, be mindful of the refund schedule policy.  The date you withdraw from a course is used to determine whether you will receive a refund of the tuition and fees associated with that class.  Withdrawing from classes does not necessarily release you from financial obligations to the University.  One deadline to keep in mind is Friday, August 26th—this is the last day to receive a full refund if you drop a class scheduled for the regular 16-week session; the 26th is also the deadline to receive a 60% refund for a class scheduled during the first 8-week session.  Additional information regarding deadlines can be found on the Academic Calendar.

  Registration Help.  For information on adding or dropping courses, please click here.  Additionally, the Registration Quick Guide provides step-by-step information for all students to be successful at UMKC.  The last day to register via Pathway for the 16-week session is Friday, August 26.  After that, you will need to submit the add/drop form (with the required signatures) to the Records Office.

Something Old, Something New: Using Your Syllabi and Technology for Success

By , August 23, 2011 8:25 am

Understanding the syllabus for each class you’re enrolled in every semester can be daunting. However, going over all the information contained in each syllabus is very important. It contains policies unique to each instructor, including grading policies, attendance policies, and their expectations of you. It also tells you what you can expect from them.

Making a note of dates listed on your syllabi can be incredibly beneficial in the future. Keep them in a place you will see them often, and can see approaching deadlines. A good idea is to put the test dates and long-term project deadlines into your calendar. UMKC Outlook accounts come with a calendar that you can use, or choose an application on your phone or computer. Often, you can sync all of these together and even set e-mail reminders or alarms to let you know when a deadline or test date is approaching. It is also helpful to have class schedule, work schedule, and extra activities listed together. This way, you can see how much time you have each day. Be sure to schedule time to devote to studying. If you don’t, it will slip by and you’ll find yourself scrambling to catch up in the future!

Transportation, Construction, and Parking Updates

By , August 23, 2011 8:24 am

There have been many changes for this semester in terms of transportation and parking!

One change you may not be used to yet is the new 4-way stop sign at 52nd Street and Cherry Street (on the corner where Epperson House is).  This is to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and drivers at this extremely busy intersection on campus.

The biggest–and most noticeable–change is the huge pit where the old parking garage was located between Cherry and Oak Streets.  Over the next year, construction of a brand new garage will be on-going…and you can keep tabs on it via webcam
