UMKC Alumna Wins Chambliss Award for Astronomy Research

By , January 25, 2011 8:32 am

Congratulations to Jennifer Nielsen for receiving a Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Student Award medal at the 217th American Astronomical Society Conference (AAS) in Seattle, Washington earlier this January.  The Chambliss awards recognize exemplary research by undergraduate and graduate students who present posters at the semi-annual meetings of AAS.  Jennifer’s research was on the chemical composition of merging galaxies, which she completed with her faculty mentor, astronomy professor Daniel McIntosh.  Find out more by checking out the press release here:  http://www.umkc.edu/news/feature.asp?id=211.

Jennifer says she could not have completed her research without Dr. McIntosh’s mentorship and guidance.  She took part in his Physics 499 Research class during her senior year at UMKC and became hooked on galaxy research.  Dr. McIntosh’s research class is open to undergraduates of all disciplines wishing to try their hand at serious astronomical research.

Dr. McIntosh is a mentor to many UMKC students, including Andrew Cooper and Cory Wagner, who also presented their original research at the conference.  Congratulations!

School of Medicine Receives Endowment in Memory of Medical Student

By , January 25, 2011 8:32 am
The UMKC School of Medicine has received a $500,000 gift to establish of an Endowed Chair in Patient Safety.  The gift comes from the parents of Vijay Babu Rayudu, a UMKC School of Medicine student who passed away in July 2007 and whose parents, Rao and Subbulaxmi Rayudu, are both physicians in the Memphis, Tennessee area.  The Rayudu family believes their memorial endowment provides a contribution to the practice of medicine that their son will not be able to provide directly.

The Endowed Chair in Patient Safety will be established through matching funds from the UMKC School of Medicine and St. Luke’s Hospital.  A national search is currently underway to identify potential candidates to fill the Chair.

There is no single thing your collegiate success hinges upon more than good test taking. Some of us are spectacular test takers, and unfortunately, many of us are overwhelmed at times by the pressure of taking an exam and/or material at hand. If there’s one thing we as students have to combat the impending doom of possibly repeating a course in summer school, it’s the idea that simply attending class on a regular basis greatly increases your chances of succeeding.
