Fall 2010 Career Fair on Sept 29!

By , September 21, 2010 8:18 am

When:  Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 10am-3pm

Where:  Swinney Recreation Center

What:  Connect with employers to learn more about internships and full-time job opportunities!  Sponsored by UMKC Career Services.

Why:  Many students often ask – why should I attend?  We all have busy schedules and time between classes is valuable.  However, attending a Career Fair allows you personal face-to-face contact with an organization, which is so important in a job search.

You may send out hundreds of resumes or complete hundreds of online applications, but direct interaction with employers at a career fair provides you with a unique opportunity to sell your skills, talents and experiences to the employer and make a great impression.

In other words, you should attend the Career Fair to:
  • find out about specific employers
  • learn about specific employment opportunities
  • learn about careers in general and research companies
  • meet employers and make contacts that can lead to employment
  • practice networking and communications skills
Sometimes students may feel discouraged when they take the time to attend a career fair, only to have employers not take their resume and tell them to apply online.  However, I want to stress the personal face-to-face contact with an organization is an important aspect of the job search.  In fact, I recommend asking employers for their contact information so you may email them once you have uploaded your application.  Showing positivity and follow-through will help you stand out from other candidates.
Employers are attending the Fall Career Fair to gain exposure for their company, seek out employees/interns and meet students in person to make contacts for future opportunities.  This last part is important…even if an employer doesn’t have current openings, they will in the future.  The UMKC Fall Career Fair is a perfect opportunity to begin networking.
So before September 29, 2010, be sure to have your resume ready to go, rehearse what you want to tell employers about your experiences, and get your business professional clothes out of the closet.  If you have any questions about this process, contact the Career Services office at 816-235-1636 to schedule an appointment.  You may also review the current list of registered employers by going to the Career Services website at www.career.umkc.edu.
Good Luck!
