The 53rd block of Troost Avenue is home to many buildings owned by Rockhurst University. Michael Dowling, founder, purchased 25 acres in 1909 which in the next year would become Rockhurst College. The college later merged with Rockhurst High School in 1923. The college remained on site and the two institutions used the same campus until the high school moved to a
separate location in 1962.
