The UMKC Women’s Soccer team had a successful Home-opening day victory on Soccer Kick-Off Day. The Roos recovered from Creighton’s penalty-kick goal in the 37th minute to earn the victory, 2-1.
Nikki Lynch scored the game-winning goal Friday against Drake and earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring the equalizer on Sunday. Lynch, from Leawood, Kan., made the WAC All-Tournament team last season as a freshman. The Roos were one win away from earning an NCAA Tournament appearance last season and have started the season 2-0.
Earning WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the Roos was Nina Tzianos. Tzianos recorded her 21st shutout against Drake and only allowed one penalty-kick goal over the weekend. Tzianos, from St. Louis, was a member of the WAC First-Team All-League last season while earning Academic All-League Honors, as well. She is the single-season record-holder for shutouts with eight in both 2013 and 2014.
The Western Athletic Conference awards Player of the Week honors each week for offense and defense.
Women’s Soccer plays two matches this weekend, headed east to Missouri State Friday and then Western Illinois Sunday.
