The UMKC women’s basketball team began the WAC season on the right note, winning their season opener against Eastern Illinois 69-53 on Saturday.
The win meant Kansas City’s first road victory in a season opening contest since 2007. Calli White led the Kangaroos at Lantz Arena with 22 points, five assists and four rebounds.
“It was a great start and we know how balanced we can be,” White said. “We are only going to go up from here. We have to keep taking good team shots and keep winning. My teammates were setting me up for great shots and opportunities and tonight they were falling for me.”
The Roos, led by Head Coach Marsha Frese, came out strong at the first minute and finished the first half with a 33-18 lead, thanks to a 16-2 run from the efforts of six different players.
From there, Kansas City never looked back. The efforts from the Panthers weren’t enough to surpass the Kangaroos, who secured a game-high 19-point lead less than three minutes into the half.
The Kangaroos controlled the home team on the defensive end, holding their opponents to 33.9 percent shooting, while forcing 15 turnovers. They also beat the Panthers on the glass, out-rebounding 40 to 34.
Next up on Tuesday, the women’s basketball team will head to Manhattan, Kan., to take on the K-State Wildcats at the Bramlage Coliseum.
