The UMKC women’s basketball team lost its second consecutive conference game to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, Feb. 2, falling 75-56 at Swinney Rec Center.
Junior guard Ericka Mattingly scored 20 points for the Roos, but it wasn’t enough to overcome UTRGV.
The two teams started with a full-court press that made for a fast-paced, back-and-forth quarter. In the first quarter alone, the Roos forced two shot-clock violations on UTRGV. The first quarter ended with the Roos leading 19-18.
UMKC struggled in the second quarter and was held to just six points. UTRGV took advantage and lead 35-25 at the half.
With no full-court press to begin the third quarter, the pace of the game slowed down, but the physicality sped up. The last three minutes of the quarter were spent with both teams taking free throws. The Roos trailed 54-42 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros pulled away, scoring off turnovers, fast breaks and points in the paint. Freshman forward Leilah Vigil fouled out with over seven minutes left.
Coming off the bench, freshmen guard Emily Ivory combined with Vigil to score 16 points. The Roos made just 18-of-58 shots on the night and went 15-of-24 from the free-throw line
For the first time this season, the Roos gave up 75+ points in back-to-back games.
The Roos will take on California Baptist University Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. at Swinney.
