Kansas City has a rich history of jazz with its own unique style. With over 40 spots that host live jazz regularly, it can be tough to know where to start.
Here are four places where you can grab a drink and get a taste for the Kansas City jazz scene.
Green Lady Lounge and The Black Dolphin
At 1809 Grand Blvd., the Green Lady Lounge offers live jazz performances every evening with no cover charge. With stunning vintage decor, great staff and delicious drinks, it is the perfect environment to kick back and hang out with friends. The Black Dolphin is located directly next to Green Lady Lounge and is an extension to the jazz club. With exposed brick walls and sleek black sofas, Black Dolphin has a more modern vibe. It offers the same drink menu, but has more of a music venue feel with a large stage that can be seen from every seat in the room. Green Lady Lounge and Black Dolphin are downtown on Grand Boulevard.
The Blue Room is in the historic 18th & Vine District and is an “exhibit” of the American Jazz Museum. The Blue Room hosts the biggest names in Kansas City jazz as well as offers open jam sessions on Monday evenings starting at 5 p.m. With the stage located centrally in the club, you’ll become immersed in the music. Make sure to check out the American Jazz Museum while you’re there to learn about the history of Kansas City jazz.
If you want to try some incredible local food while listening to jazz, then stop by The Phoenix, located at 302 W. 8th St. Along with live jazz in the evenings, The Phoenix also offers a Saturday jazz brunch. This cozy corner restaurant also has a small outdoor seating area; perfect for listening to jazz when the weather is nice.
Californos at 4124 Pennsylvania Ave. in Westport includes a restaurant, bar and event space along with a catering company and live music. Check out the bar and bistro for brunch or a dinner date. Along with great food and drinks, the French doors lining the front allow for open-air seating when the weather is warm. Californos hosts a variety of music including the Jazz Nebula featuring local jazz artists on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday nights.
