UMKC volleyball opens spring season with tournament

Although there was nothing at stake in Saturday’s volleyball tournament at Swinney Rec Center, such match-ups can show what improvements are needed before next season. The Roo Spring Invitational gave the Roos a look at other teams and themselves, helping them gauge what their performance next fall will look like. Other teams that participated in the tournament were the University of Omaha, University of Arkansas, Kansas State and South Dakota State.

UMKC played Kansas State in its first match. Each match was played for 50 minutes. The Roos won the first set 25-21, but were losing the second set 22-18 when time expired. Both teams had their share of service errors in that game. UMKC had a few service aces in the short match.

In the second contest, UMKC played South Dakota State. UMKC played well in the first set, with two service aces in a row at one point. UMKC won 25-21. The second set did not go nearly as well. UMKC was behind South Dakota for most of the set and used a few timeouts to attempt a comeback, but South Dakota State won 25-20.

Coach Christi Posey was glad to have the opportunity to play without too much pressure.

“Spring volleyball is about learning and refining skills, developing new techniques and working on new connections on the court,” Posey said.

The Roos play in Omaha next weekend.
