The UMKC women’s and men’s tennis teams ended their seasons at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament last week.
After advancing past the quarterfinals, both the men’s and women’s teams lost in the semi-finals. Both teams earned the three seed in the tournaments.
The women’s team, which was searching for a third consecutive tournament title, had success in the opening round, beating Seattle University 4-1 to advance to play New Mexico State University (NMSU). In the semi-finals, the Roos found themselves in the midst of a comeback that ultimately fell short. After a sluggish start, the Roos hit back to tie things at 3-3 before losing the final match.
The men’s tennis team attempted to clinch its second tournament title in three years. After dominating Seattle University 4-0, the team advanced to play NNMSU, but was unable to find its stride before losing.
The Roos are now 1-4 all-time versus NMSU in the conference tournament. The team finished with a 11-12 record.
Before leaving for the tournament, the WAC announced the Roos picked up postseason honors and that three players were named to the All-WAC Singles Second Team.
Two women’s tennis players, Katie Fries, a senior from Overland Park, and Yana Grechkina from Vladimir, Russia, garnered the accolades. The award was Fries’ second All-WAC selection, as she was selected for the All-WAC Singles first team last season.
For the men’s team, Diego Giraldo, a sophomore from Medellin, Colombia who was named WAC freshman player of the year last season, was also selected.
