The UMKC University Police Department (UMKCPD) received its accreditation this past July at the international conference.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) granted UMKCPD their accreditation after a rigorous review process.
In April, UMKCPD went through an on-site process to gain their accreditation.
Obtaining the accreditation means the University police department meets the commission’s progressive standards through a voluntary process.
The accreditation examines and certifies the UMKCPD’s policies, management, operations and support services.
“The accreditation status is for a period of three years during which the agency must submit annual reports, attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited,” UMKCPD Captain Joseph Rucinski said.
By gaining its accreditation, UMKCPD joins University of Missouri – Columbia and the University of Missouri – St. Louis, the only other university agencies in the state of Missouri.
“This accomplishment demonstrates the police department’s commitment to excellence and its continuing effort to provide a consistently high level of service to the students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus,” said Michael Bongatz, Chief of UMKCPD.
CALEA currently has 578 accredited Law Enforcement agencies. Forty-eight of those agencies are university agencies.
