The first half of the play was an intense back and forth between both teams, opportunities coming from the Roo’s defense, sending long balls over the top to senior forward Eric McWoods. In the first with 18 minutes left to play, senior forward #9 Eric McWoods snuck by the Hawks defense receiving a long ball from the back and capitalized on the breakaway by burying the ball in the back of the net past Rockhurst senior goalkeeper Logan Feldmann.

The Hawks responded with an intense offensive push and dynamic ball work between seniors Connor Mullen, Adam Michael and Kaleb Jackson. Shortly after the Roo’s goal, Hawks junior defender Vincent Swann crossed the ball into UMKC penalty box looking for junior forward Claudio Romano but was interrupted by Roo’s junior goalkeeper Ryan Tome. Another opportunity from the Hawks came from a loose ball in the penalty box, Jackson took the shot and just missed wide.

The dynamic in the first half carried over into the second as the Roo’s struggled to get the ball out of their own end while the Hawks put shots on goal. During the start of second, the Hawks lead with an all-out attack on the Roo’s defense.    Rockhurst’s equalizing goal came in the 80 minute of play after a corner kick from Junior Andrew Reinholz to Junior Andrew Patke who headed the ball in past Roo’s goalkeeper Ryan Tome. Just two minutes after Rockhurst dealt the equalizing goal UMKC responded with a strong offensive push that lead to the victory. After getting the ball out wide and beating a defender junior midfielder Henry Ramirez laid a cross to Junior forward Pandelis Popgeorgiev who slotted the ball right past Rockhurst goalkeeper for the deciding goal of the game.

UMKC started their regular season play on Friday, Aug. 25, with a 3-0 victory against Central Arkansas.
