The UMKC Women’s Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss against Utah Valley with a 66-59 defeat at Swinney Recreation Center Thursday.
The Roos have had a difficult season so far and the Lady Roos might have been looking forward to playing at Swinney, where they hoped to find themselves on a more equal footing. The home court advantage almost worked, with the Roos coming close to a victory.
The game was never a shoe-in either way, with the score varying back and forth throughout the game. Utah Valley at times seemed intimidated by a somewhat stifling defense by UMKC.
UMKC’s defense was aggressive all evening, working efficiently up until the final two minutes.
It did not help matters that UMKC’s offense went especially cold near the end of the contest.
UMKC was winning early in the fourth quarter, but the Utah Valley Wolverines rallied the troops and staged an impressive comeback. There was little UMKC could do about the attempt, with futile tries at 3-pointers near the very end.
There was a standout for the Lady Roos in the game – Samantha Waldron. In the second half she had a significant amount of UMKC’s overall points. She had seven 3-pointers in the entire game, and was a formidable threat from beyond the arc for the entire game.
The Lady Roos, despite a losing record, have the same intra-conference record as Utah Valley, with each being at 1-1.
