The men’s soccer team fell 1-2 to Rockhurst University in front of a Durwood Stadium’s record crowd of 2,457 loud fans on Sunday night in the annual “Battle of the Blue”.
Despite controlling nearly 70 percent of the game’s possession and outshooting the Hawks 13 to 7, the Roos’ felt short in a nerve-racking game.
The Hawks opened the score in the third minute of play when Marc Magee tapped the ball into the back of the net after a free kick that confused the defense. In the 19th minute, just when the Roos’ seemed to have gained momentum, Jake Grimes moved ahead due to a corner kick to beat junior goalkeeper Chris McGaughy.
Coach Benben’s players came out more aggressive in the second half and had full possession of the ball, but it wasn’t until the 61st minute when sophomore Broc Cramer scored for the Blue and Gold after he connected a cross from junior Tato Chiaparro with the head to beat the goalkeeper.
UMKC kept the pressure and played most of the second half on the Hawks side of the field. In the 73rd minute, Chiaparro came really close to finding the equalizer, but his shot went over the bar.
After 90 minutes of play, the referee ended the game and the Hawks took the exhibition for the second year in a row.
The Roos’ will continue its preseason when Bradley comes to Kansas City Saturday August 24 at 7 pm.
