In recent weeks, history was made here at UMKC within the Department of UMKC Athletics.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) added John Bayron Sosa, co-captain and midfielder of the mens soccer team, to the 2010 Missouri Athletic Club’s (MAC) Hermann Trophy watch list.
“John Bayron’s inclusion on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list is well-deserved,” Head Coach Rick Benben said.
Sosa is the first player at UMKC to receive this honor. To date, he is the only representative of the Summit League to have been added to the list. Sosa is also one of 39 Division 1 mens soccer players on the list.
“He has proven himself as an outstanding collegiate player and certai
nly has the potential to be included among the best players in college soccer,” Benben said.
Sosa will begin his senior season this fall.
“I am just looking forward to a good season, I want a championship,” Sosa said.
Sosa was born in Colombia and lived there until he was 14.
“I started playing soccer when I was five. Sosa said “In Colombia, that’s all we had to do is play soccer.”
In the future, Sosa hopes to continue playing soccer and one day play professionally.
While his major is Spanish, he is also interested in criminal justice. He wants to go to the police academy as an alternative career to professional soccer.
“Since I want to go to the police academy, criminal justice has been
one of my favorite classes at UMKC,” Sosa said
Sosa is proud of himself for being added to the watch list. He has his coach and team members to thank for this recent success.
“Honestly, it’s kind of like a team award. I am who I am because of my team,” Sosa said.
The voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy will take place this November.
“I don’t think about winning the trophy as much. I focus on the season,” Sosa said. “If it comes then it comes. I am hoping for a great season and a championship.”
Receiving the MAC Hermann Trophy would be the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer.
Until the voting takes place, Sosa is going to keep playing soccer at his best.
