SGA talks library fees, Bird scooters

Students could find themselves paying more in annual fees by the end of 2019.

A proposed library fee was just one of the topics discussed at the Student Government Association (SGA) meeting on Monday night.

If passed, the library fee would begin this fall and gradually increase over time. The proposed library fees begin at $3 per credit hour, with students paying for a maximum of 12 credit hours. By Fall 2025, however, students would be paying $10 per credit hour. Students will have the opportunity to vote on the issue this spring.

Changes are also coming to UMKC’s Kangaroo Pantry. The food pantry, which is located off campus at 4825 Troost Avenue, provides non-perishable food items to UMKC students and their families, as well as meal swipes that can be used on campus. During the Kangaroo Pantry’s hours of operation on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, visitors can receive up to five meal swipes.

In addition to being accepted in the cafeteria, meal swipes from the Kangaroo Pantry can now be used in the evenings at Jazzman’s Cafe in the Student Union, as well as at Fresh Market in Oak Street Hall.

Last semester, students donated over 800 meal swipes to the food pantry.

Vice Provost of Student Affairs Sandra Miles spoke to SGA members about another change coming to campus this semester in the form of a new initiative called Union Takeover.

During Union Takeover on Wednesdays from 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., students are welcome to listen to music and enjoy free food on the second floor of the Student Union.

The initiative is part of a greater mission to show more students what UMKC has to offer.

“We’re trying to make this a more exciting, engaging and lively campus,” said Miles.

Although it seemed like a potential collaboration between UMKC and Bird scooters fizzled out last semester, the partnership may still happen. If it does, UMKC will receive $1 per day for each Bird scooter that “nests” on campus.

While students would have to pay a fee to use the scooters, Pell Grant recipients would be exempt.

SGA members are interested in using the funds accumulated from the collaboration for scholarships or university organizations.

In an earlier version of this story, U-News incorrectly stated that the proposed library fee caps out at $12. The proposed fee caps out at 12 credit hours, or $36.
