When I arrived at Jones Bar-B-Q as they opened at 11 a.m., I halfway expected the restaurant to be sold out for the day. However, that luckily wasn’t the case.
While waiting in line, anticipation was high as the smoke from the barbecue pits previewed what the cuisine would taste like. Once I received my food, the “Queer Eye” Season 3 standout mostly delivered on my expectations.
Before I begin this review, I think it’s important to note I am a native Texan, so I have pretty high standards when it comes to barbecue.
I ordered the everyday special-one meat between two buns with a choice of side. I opted for beef and a side of potato salad.
After watching Jones Bar-B-Q’s “Queer Eye” episode, I had high expectations for their signature sauce. I was curious to see what it would taste like, especially since the pair of women who run the restaurant were so adamant about not revealing their recipe.
To me, it almost tasted like the secret ingredient was a type of jelly due to the tangy taste and thick consistency.
The prices were pretty reasonable, especially for a barbecue restaurant. In total, my entire meal cost around $8.
Perhaps the thing that bothered me most was the location of the restaurant. The problem is Jones Bar-B-Q isn’t really a restaurant—it’s more of a food stand with outdoor seating.
Nestled within a shopping center, this dive sits mere feet from a fairly busy street and railroad tracks. I understand the location isn’t an easy fix, however, I’d rather not hear the occasional train whistles while eating.
Jones Bar-B-Q stands out not only for its sauce, but for its sense of community. With so many large chain restaurants in Kansas City, few dives still exist quite like Jones.
Even while waiting in line, you can notice the owners, sisters Deborah “Shorty” and Mary “Little” Jones, talking to seasoned customers like old friends. You really get the sense these women care about their barbecue meats and customers. And that’s what makes Jones Bar-B-Q special.
Located at 6706 Kaw Drive, Kansas City, KS 66111, Jones Bar-B-Q is open Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. or until sold out.
