H.E.R. is headed to UMKC’s campus this week. Accompanied by special guest Jacquees, H.E.R. will perform for the students from 7 to 9 p.m. in Swinney on April 5.

UMKC Rootopia, the student organization consisting of concert lovers and music fans, is hosting the concert.

“I think for many students, this is an opportunity to see someone they’ve been a fan of for a while,” said Harriet Campbell, the Marketing Coordinator for Rootopia.

Anthony Maly, UMKC coordinator of student activities and adviser of Rootopia, added that campus concerts are great entertainment outlets for students at affordable prices. He said the artist H.E.R. gained the most interest on student surveys, which is why she is next on the list to perform at UMKC.

H.E.R. debuted on the major-label RCA Records in 2016 and is on her “Lights On” worldwide tour. Her album, “H.E.R. Vol. 1,” was released in September 2016, and “Vol. 2: The B Sides” was released in October 2017.

Campbell described H.E.R.’s music as, “chilled yet driven with a ballad feel.”

She recommended listening to her song “Jungle” to get a taste of the music.

UMKC education student Doyne Dodd, also a fan of H.E.R., described her music as calming. According to him, it is the perfect music for relaxing and studying.

“She’s got her own twist to what she does, and she’s different,” said Dodd.

When Dodd first listened to H.E.R., he said she initially reminded him of the artist SZA. He also compared her to Jhené Aiko, Rihanna, and Beyoncé.

He said it would be a cool experience to see H.E.R. in person right as her career is building momentum.

“It’s important that we bring artists to campus who are popular and current with our peers,” said Campbell. She said Rootopia wanted to bring a female headliner to UMKC.

“With her talent and growing popularity, she was a perfect fit,” Campbell said. “We are so excited to host her.”

She has performed on the BET awards, toured with Bryson Tiller, and opened for artists like Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, and Kid Cudi.

Over the past few years, artists like Drake, Future, Timeflies, We The Kings, and N.E.R.D. accompanied by Rihanna have visited the UMKC campus. Rootopia has also hosted comedy events such as Kevin Hart, which turned out to be a great show, according to Campbell.

These events are a way to de-stress while enjoying a vibrant campus experience, according to Maly. Campbell encouraged students to invite their friends as this is a chance to have fun before finals hit.

Tickets are available for purchase at the central ticket office on campus or online at The price for students is $15, and $35 for the public.
