Roos Sweep Home Opening Weekend

he Kangaroos opened their home schedule with a sweep of California State Bakersfield. The Kangaroos have now won five in a row and own second place in the WAC with a 5-1 conference record.

The season has already been filled with amazing moments, including a home run by freshman Rachel Pate in her first career plate appearance.

Riding high off an extra inning win against Grand Canyon, the ‘Roos beat CSUB all three games, 6-1, 10-3 and 12-7. Highlights from the series include a six-hit day by senior Brooke Parker on day one. UMKC’s pitching was outstanding throughout the series, shutting down the Runners’ bats and providing some offense of their own.

Senior pitcher Katie Kelley drove in four runs in Game three’s winning effort, proving that her seven career WAC Player of the Week Honors are well deserved. Kelley has been honored four times as a hitter and three times as a pitcher. With 34 RBIs at the plate and 7 wins in the circle this season, Kelley is having another outstanding season.

The offense generated big innings all weekend, scoring five or more runs in three different innings. The defense is on pace to break the school record for double plays in a season, turning 15 heading into the weekend. Averaging a double play in every other game, the Kangaroos rank 10th in that category.
After playing their first 27 games on the road, ‘Roos Softball now enjoys home field advantage in 11 of the remaining 18 games. The next home series against Utah Valley starts on April 15th.
