The Kangaroos’ volleyball team defeated the Saint Louis University Bilikens for the first time in school history on opening day at the Drury Hotels Redhawks Invitational hosted by Southeast Missouri State University. After dropping one match to Arkansas State, the Kangaroos shut out host SEMO the next day.

It took five sets to defeat SLU. Sydney Crimmins, who led the team to the victory with 12 kills and 13 digs, said it was a great feeling and helped the team improve in areas they needed to work on.
“I think as a team we just tried to improve and better the ball each chance we get,”said Crimmins, a standout in both victories.

Crimmins and teammate Taryn Miller were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“Our team chemistry really helped and there were good connections in the team,” Crimmins said.
The team had 14 blocks to SLU’s four.

“Blocking is a strength of ours. We’re able to work on our technique and Coach (Trent) Jones really helped us to look at the hitters and talk about what they’re getting out to be able to stop them” Crimmins said. In the win against SEMO, the Kangaroos had 12 team blocks to the Redhawks 3.

Nicole Wenthoff was the assists leader with 22 and 19 against SLU and SEMO, respectively. Crimmins mentioned how effective she was at helping the Kangaroos work their team system.
“Just being in the system and the passers were getting her a good ball and she was able to rush the pass right behind to get the hitters better connections,” Crimmins said.

Looking forward, Crimmins talked about how the team is constantly trying to improve with each opportunity.

“Each opportunity we’re just looking to get better,” Crimmins said.

The Kangaroos have a good chance to improve the first weekend in September as they head to the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kansas to face Duke, Western Illinois and KU.
