Proposal to Increase Library Hours

Students at UMKC are probably painfully aware that the Miller Nichols Library closes at 11 p.m. The Student Government Association conducted a town hall to discuss issues regarding library hours last Monday.

The student government opened the forum by proposing that Library hours be increased during finals week to 24 hour periods. This sentiment was met with unanimous approval by students in attendance. Most even wanted to take it farther.
“Most other universities, especially those that emphasize research, have 24 hour libraries,” one student said. “It is unacceptable that we do not.”

A student government representative also noted the demand for increased hours is shown by the popularity of 24 hour study locations such as Starbucks. Some students are even traveling to other college campuses such as KU to use their facilities.

As discussion progressed, a student who worked more than 30 hours a week discussed the impact that diminished library hours has on those with jobs. Many students who work after school jobs do not get off until 10 p.m.

The downside of having library hours increased is the financial aspect. The student government pointed out that the library is already operating at full budget. This would mean that an increase in library hours would have to come straight out of students’ pockets. For all the students present from Volker campus, this did not appear to be much of a problem. The increase in tuition was negligible in comparison to the benefit from better library hours.

Many students who opposed to the tuition increase attended school at the Hospital Hill campus the Health Sciences Library will not be impacted by the purposed hourly raises. This means that the increase in tuition would not have any benefit unless they want to make the 20 minute trip to Volker campus.

The possibility of extending hours is not limited to just Miller Nichols Library. If funding was available, we would like to extend hours at the Health Sciences Library on Hospital Hill as well. Librarians are available to talk to student groups about this and other improvements. Please let me know and we will arrange to meet with you.
