One win, one loss for Volleyball at home

UMKC Volleyball’s home week at Swinney Recreation Center resulted in a win and a loss for the Roos who now stand at 7-13 for the season and 3-4 in conference play.

UMKC battled it out with Utah Valley Saturday night in a 4-1 up-end by the Wolverines. Roos led in the first set of match ups, with the Wolverines tailing close behind at every point. The Roos fell behind, quadrupled during the set, but  managed to stay on top of the wolverines.

Freshman outside hitter Alex Ratzlaff evened out the scoreboard, 20-20, with an ace before the first time out by the Roos. The Roos returned to the court with UVU briefly taking the lead.

The teams tied the knot at least three more times before the Roos took the set, 29-27, with a score settling spike from sophomore outside hitter Alicia Harrington.

After a promising first set win, the lead slipped right from the Roos’ grasp. The Wolverine pack fought back, building up momentum to take the lead and keep it.

The Wolverines maneuvered cleverly on the court, with hard-crosses from UVU’s senior middle blocker Brighton Taylor to freshman outside hitter Kirsten Allred to dominate the board at 7-15. The Wolverines swiped the second and third sets from the Roos, 25-14 and 25-21, respectively.

The Wolverines wrapped up the end of the match with a 25-18 set win over the Roos, placing the Wolverines at 10-12 and 5-2.

Thursday’s home game win was no indication of the loss to come for the Roos. It was a sweep for the Roos, 3-0, against the Redhawks.

The Roos wasted no time setting up the first set for a win as they took the lead early against Seattle University. Sophomore Mykal Sadler and senior Mikayla Martinez proved to be the tie breaking combination over the Redhawks from kills during the match.

UMKC sent the Redhawks soaring back home with quick defeats in the second and third sets, 25-19 and 25-15 victories respectively.
