New student group bolsters school spirit

The atmosphere of UMKC events hasn’t been hopping lately, but over the course of this year, a group called Roo Nation is seeking to change that.

The organization’s purpose is to promote student involvement on campus. Brandon Shuey created the group with one goal: bring students together through school spirit.

Since the group’s creation, members say there’s been an influx of pride on campus. Roo Nation not only promotes the attendance of students at sporting events, but also hosts fun activities. At the end of the fall semester, the group partnered with the athletics department to host a dodgeball and pizza program.

“School spirit is important, and we want to be the driving force for that,” said Shuey.

Roo Nation is also run by Co-President Anna Struz, Vice President Daphne Posadas, Social Media Coordinator Hannah Dunbar, and Advisor Brittney Bryson.

UMKC offers basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball and track & field, giving students plenty of opportunities to get out on the field and support their school.

All students are encouraged to attend the weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 8 p.m., located in the Johnson Hall lounge.
