New semester, new bike: UMKC Clean Commute lets students rent bikes for free

UMKC has a new program to help you get around campus this year. If you are a student, faculty or staff member, you can rent a free bike all semester long from Swinney Rec Center as part of it’s Clean Commute program.

“I’m happy I found out about it on Roo Groups,” said student Cynthia Anyaso. “I get tired of walking, and I hope renting the bike will be easier for me to get around.”

Clean Commute was created to challenge and encourage members of UMKC to bike, walk or use the bus. The bike rental program costs nothing for renters, and the registration only takes a couple of minutes.

Bicycle mechanic Anthony Deffenbaugh said if renters want to keep up with the program, they only need to come back and update their paperwork.

“Our busiest semester will be the fall,” Deffenbaugh said. “We have between 20 and 25 bikes checked out.”

To start the process, go to Room B38 in the basement of Swinney Rec. When you get there, you will find bicycle mechanics. You can ask for a bike, and they will assist you by tuning up a rental while you fill out some paperwork and a waiver. Renters will be asked to show their ID or their enrollment status on Pathway.

Along with a bike, renters will also be issued a helmet, bike lock and a lock key.  Maintenance is also covered in the rental agreement. Renters can come by between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. every day.

More information is available on the Swinney website.
