New Roos learn how to stay afloat

Root beer floats greeted the freshmen and transfer students at the Stay Afloat event in Johnson Hall last Wednesday evening. Delta Sigma Theta sorority sponsored the event, while residential life representative Tiara Gibson and senior Taszia Starks ran it.

Students played pool and ping-pong as they waited for the event to begin. Then, representatives from Swinney Recreation Center, the Office of Student Involvement and the Multicultural Student Organization Council set up booths for students to visit and learn about campus resources.

Gibson expressed excitement about how the event went.

“It was great for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and we were very happy for the turnout we had,” she said.

Starks clarified the purpose of Wednesday’s event.

“It is for students to get the campus resources that are available to them through their college journey here at UMKC,” she said.

Along with the students, Brian Westhues, Intramural Sports Manager and Swinney Recreation Center representative, also enjoyed the event. His favorite part? The refreshments.

“The root beer floats were a nice touch,” he said.
