Missouri Mavericks take losses Halloween weekend

In the fifth home game of the 2010-`11 season, the Missouri Mavericks lost to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 2-1.

Complete with 10 new cheerleaders, also known as the Filly Spirit Squad and a fan-based costume contest, the Missouri Mavericks couldn’t pull out a win Saturday night.

The Spirit Squad is the first ever for the Mavs and a nice addition to the team.  Tryouts were held in August and 10 females were chosen to represent the blue and gold, western Missouri’s ice hockey team, part of the Central Hockey League (CHL).

The Mavs have lost three straight games, two straight at home and they slipped to sixth in the league standings.

Missouri had a 1-0 lead for most of the game, but with less than half of the final period left, the Mudbugs pulled through and scored twice.

Maverick No. 55, Dominic D’Amour scored the first goal of the game with two minutes and 47 seconds left in the second period.  D’Amour is a first-year defenseman from LaSalle, Quebec.

A handful of fans showed up in costume for the costume contest.  One family came as Popeye, Olive Oyl and Swee’Pea.  However, the three final winners were the ‘Grim Reaper’, a couple dressed as zombies and a 4-year old dressed as a mini Mavericks player, complete with pads.

Missouri hosts the Wichita Thunder at 7:05 p.m Saturday.

Single-game tickets range from $14-$35.  For more information on the Missouri Mavericks, visit
