Mental Illness Awareness Week

In honor of Mental Illness Awareness Week Oct. 7-13, here is a timeline of mental health events for the rest of October.

These events were chosen by affordability, and are all either free or $30 and under.

On Campus

Fri. Oct. 12: 3:00pm-5:00pm. The Silent Struggle: Mental Health in African American Women & Children. Free. The Silent Struggle will address mental health in African American women and children to increase awareness and reduce the stigma in the African American community. Black women are one of the most undertreated populations and the suicide rate amongst youth has increased. The Silent Struggle discussion will address depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, domestic violence, substance use, parent-child relationships, and how mental health is associated with physical health. This is a social time for queer students to get together and have fun, discuss current events amongst themselves, and build a supportive LGBTQIA+ community. Tues. Oct. 16: 6:00pm-8:00pm. NAMI Talks: Stereotypes & Mental Illness. Free. Join us for our first NAMI Talk of the year! We have a great panelist speaking on their personal experiences either struggling with a mental illness, or working in the mental health field, and being stereotyped. Come hear the stories of other students and community members, and learn more about how to be mindful of stereotypes. Location: Student Union – UMKC

Tues. Oct. 16: 7:00pm-9:00pm. Battle of the Sexes. Free. Join Sister Circle and Men of Color as we talk about the differences amongst men and women as it relates to relationships. Location: Culture House. RSVP on RooGroups.

Wed. Oct. 17: 12:00pm-1:30pm. Student Org Leaders Lunch and Learn. Free. This is part 4 of our leadership workshop series. This is an event held for student organization leaders and teach them the best way they can do things. As well as ways they can improve. Location: 301 SGA Chambers. RSVP on RooGroups.

Wed. Oct. 17: 4:00pm-4:50pm. +Energy General body meeting. Free. Come join +Energy as we gather and launch into our theme for the month of October: “Embracing a Positive Lifestyle”. Location: 402 Student Union. RSVP on RooGroups.

Fri. Oct. 26: 8:00am-2:00pm. Men of Color Conference/AALO. Free. The idea for the summit rose out of UMKC’s desire to address the disparities in recruitment and retention of African American and Latino males, to and through college. Sessions covered at the summit included developing a personal image, recognizing signs of depression and anxiety, the definition of masculinity, the misconceptions of the black male, UMKC STEM programs, the impact of myths on men of color, becoming an effective communicator, becoming your own boss and college tips. Fri. Oct. 26: 2:00pm-3:00pm. UMKC Out List Panel. Free. The UMKC Pride Alliance will be hosting a panel comprised of individuals featured on the UMKC Out List. These individuals will share about their experiences coming out, and life as a visible, “out” individual. This panel will be moderated by Dean of Students, Dr. Miles. Location: 402 Student Union. Master the art of living with more energy, with emotions at a higher consciousness, and expectations that you design. Thurs. Oct. 11: 5:30pm-7:00pm. Gentle Yoga and Guided Meditation-GGKC Clubhouse. Free. Join Chris Lamb at Gilda’s Club KC to practice moving meditation with a gentle, slow, grounding yoga class. We will use “krama” and modifications to ensure poses are accessible to people of all different abilities. After we have warmed and stretched our bodies, we will settle into a stress-freeing guided meditation to relax our over-busy minds and reconnect with our inner selves. Sat. Oct. 13: 10:00am-12:00pm. Second Saturday Silent Retreat. Free but donations welcome. Optional meditation instruction at 9:30 a.m. This retreat is designed to be a container of silence for anyone interested in reflection and meditation. Mon. Oct. 15: 7:00pm-8:00pm. Survivors Unite-Monthly Group Meetings. Free.  Momma On a Mission, Inc. will unite the surviving families that have been affected by violence, homicide or a traumatic crime. We understand that grief is a process that is experienced in different stages. Our group meetings are geared to help families heal and learn how to properly release their emotions by instructing through conversation with support. Sun. Oct. 21: 7:00pm-9:00pm. The Spiritual Bombshell Workshop. Tickets: $15. This workshop will be a beautiful way to connect and support each other in a high vibe, loving and nonjudgmental environment. I’m looking for a tribe of women who are craving connection, change and divine intervention. Women who want to be brought back home to their soul, that are interested in elevating themselves and other tribe sisters and are tired of traveling this world alone. This is a meditation class with different themed soul exercises. This month we will be figuring out what our main Aura Color is and how it affects our relationships, sex and career. Sun. Oct. 28: 2:00pm-4:00pm. Become Love: The Art of Self-Elevation. Free. In a world of instant gratification and artificial intelligence, the challenge of discovering, establishing and maintaining genuine, organic connections and relationships presents itself in unique ways. With so much going on around us, it’s often a daunting task to, first and foremost, discover, establish and maintain a relationship with oneself, which is key to establishing other relationships. The focus of this free workshop is to discuss principles of love as relates to first becoming whole in the full acceptance of self. Building on the energy cultivated from the last workshop of Healing & Relationships, this experience will also utilize Chi Gung techniques that will allow the participant to redirect any negative energy that seeks to dissipate love into the proper outlet while drawing in the pure and most powerful energy of love. Wed. Oct. 31: 11:00am-1:00pm. Trauma and the Brain presentation. Free. Drinks and light snacks provided. What’s scarier on halloween than to dissect trauma down to the smallest brain cell? Learn how to help your coworker, friend, spouse or patient deal with the impacts of trauma and the brain from a clinical, science based perspective. Marine Corps Veteran, former firefighter and current Director of the Valor Recovery Program, David. R. Strother, is an expert in treating trauma, PTSD, sexual assault and substance use in military members and first responders. Of the more than 500 patients his treatment team has served, 98% leave feeling whole again because they have mastered how to pack away their traumatic past. Wed. Oct. 31: 12:30pm-2:30pm. Trauma Awareness Training-KC. Free. the prevalence and impact of trauma on children’s brain development. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES) which first introduced us to the long-term impact that trauma can have on social, emotional and health outcomes; what we must do to help children and families recover from trauma; and what is behind many of the behaviors we see and how we can shift our perspective to serve children and families through the lens of trauma.
