Lopes Stop Lady Roos’ Winning Streak

The Lady Roos dropped a game against the GCU Lopes at Swinney Rec. The loss dropped the Roos to 9-15 on the season and 4-7 in the WAC. It also kept UMKC from sweeping the season series against GCU.

Aries Washington led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sam Waldron also scored in double figures. Point Guard Daijane Dillard scored on an impressive effort against a much larger defender in the 3rd quarter and cut the lead to one, but the Lopes responded with 12 straight points in the fourth quarter. The final score, 68-59 Lopes, ended the Kangaroos winning streak.

Sam Waldron kept the team alive from outside draining two three pointers. Washington finished 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Coach Martha Frese thought the team competed. “We did a good job of continuing to battle,” Coach Frese said. “This one came down to execution. We let some of the mistakes we were making on the offensive end impact us on the defensive end. As this team matures we have to learn to play one possession at a time and understand you can’t control what happened on the last play and move your mindset onto the next one. I’m excited to get back on the court Saturday and learn from this one tonight.”

Aries Washington shared similar thoughts after the game. “We were letting small things get to us and we let that affect our game,” she said. “We needed to come together and focus in on the moment at hand instead of dwelling on previous plays.”
