Last Thursday, Kansas City held an intimate listening party for one of Hip Hop’s newest mainstream stars. Andy Mineo, an artist on Reach Records, just released “Uncomfortable,” his second studio album under the label. “Uncomfortable” debuted at No. 2 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap charts and No. 3 overall. His last studio album “Heroes for Sale” moved 28,000 units in the first week and achieved No. 11 overall on Billboard 200. Those are huge numbers for an artist on an independent label. It’s only safe to say that he will soar higher as he has appeared multiple times on BET, MTV and the popular “Sway in the Morning” radio show since then. Reach Records is co-owned by Lecrae one of the top independent rappers in America and a multi Grammy award winner. Reach Records has reached “The Tonight Show”, “Good Morning America”, the BET Awards and has been endorsed by NBA Champion Steph Curry and Golf Champion Bubba Watson.
This event was hosted by Kansas City native Jesse Brown. Brown is a music business student at Full Sail University, a lifestyle representative for music marketer Stache Media and owns a management company that houses Gee Watts, one of Kansas City’s rising artist. Gee Watts recently landed a song with Kendrick Lamar and was featured on Tech N9ne’s latest album “Special Effects.” Brown says the music business is his passion, and he is working toward doing it full-time in the near future. He’s been in the business for six years and has made great strides with his artists while executive producing over 20 projects. He states that being a student “is easy when you find time to do your work.” Going to a music-based college seems like fun, but he proves that it takes a lot of work to actually get to where you’re trying to go.
Brown got the job for the listening party two weeks before he needed to set a date. He partnered with Kansas City’s first urban gospel FM station, Praise 95.3, to pull it off. He went in the direction of Praise 95 because Mineo is mostly known in the positive and Christian rap genre. Devon Price, owner of the radio station quickly helped Brown put the event together and hosted it at the newly remolded studio and home of the station. An intimate setting of fans, radio personalities, Dj’s and music contacts showed up to support and hear Mineo’s new album. Complete with free Uncomfortable download cards, lanyards, posters, and food, Brown believes this was a good event to show his team at Stache Media that he can organize under pressure.
